First Home Buyers FAQs

How much deposit do I need to buy my first home?

Banks typically prefer a 20% deposit. However, there are government schemes and exemptions to rules that only require 5% - 10% deposit. This includes First Home Loan and First Home Partner grants offered by Kainga Ora.

Can I use my KiwiSaver to buy my first home?

If you have been a KiwiSaver member for three years – you might be eligible to use your KiwiSaver savings to contribute towards your first home's deposit, providing a valuable boost to your deposit. However at least $1,000 must remain in your KiwiSaver account.

You can check full eligibility here.

To apply - You will need to contact your KiwiSaver provider for approval. Once approved, you should get a confirmation letter which states how much you can withdraw for your first home.

What is the First Home Grant?

If you’ve been contributing to your KiwiSaver for at least three years, you may be eligible for a First Home Grant. How much you receive depends on things like your income and the type of home you want to buy.

For existing homes, the First home Grant can provide $1,000 per year that you’ve been in KiwiSaver - up to a maximum $5,000 (five-years) per person. Therefore, if you are a couple and you both qualify for the grant, you could receive up to $10,000 towards your first home.

For newbuild homes, the first home grant can provide $2,000 per year that you’ve been in KiwiSaver - up to a maximum of $10,000 (five-years) per person. Therefore, if you are a couple and you both qualify for the grant, you could receive up to $20,000 towards your first home.
